Goodbye, Tax Stress!
April is Stress Awareness Month, and although the experts won’t admit it, there’s only one thing they could have had in mind when picking April: tax season.
Tax Day can be a huge source of stress, especially if you have IRS back taxes hanging over your head. That stress can undermine everything good in your life. The more stressed you are, the more problems you’ll have concentrating and making decisions. Stress can even cause depression, headaches, back pain, and stomach issues — symptoms that will tank your productivity at work and happiness at home.
So, what can you do to reduce your stress, and tax stress in particular?
1.Attack the problem. Some sources of stress are out of our control. If someone you love has cancer, for example, you can’t do much more than support them through it. But there are other stressors you can tackle head-on — including relationship struggles, financial problems, and tax issues. To attack the latter, start by following these tips for filing your current taxes on time. Then, attack your IRS back taxes. This may sound intimidating but it’s the only way to truly get your life back.
You’ll never have peace if you bury your head in the sand and hope your IRS problems go away. But you can finally relax if you address the back tax issue now, before it escalates. The IRS has to follow strict rules and procedures, and you can navigate them if you’re organized and know your taxpayer rights. 2. Hit the gym. Exercise releases mood-boosting endorphins that will drain your stress away. Add in a fruit- and vegetable-rich diet and 7–9 hours of sleep per night, and you’ll speed down the path toward recovery.
3.Confide in someone. According to the American Institute of Stress, when you feel overwhelmed, you should “share your problems and how you are feeling and coping with a family member, friend, doctor, pastor or counselor.” This can be cathartic, and their ideas for solving your problem may surprise you!
